The history of the Vermin is largely unknown by those who dwell upon Alura’s
surface. But for as long as anyone can remember, perhaps even further back than
that, the Vermin were there. The Vermin built their vast empire in the
subterranean depths of the Alura, where they wait for the day that their horde
will rise from their place in the nether world to take control of all the lands.
This almost came to pass in a time long ago around the year 300...
The empire of the Vermin was divided into four leading clans. Clan Seer was a
powerful group of spell casters. They were extremely proficient in the black
arts and very protective of their magic. Clan Tyrant consisted of mighty
warriors, battle hardened and willing to die for their cause. Clan Seeker was
made up by hunters and trackers. It was said they could give anyone, Vermin or
land folk, a month’s advance and still be able to hunt them down. Finally
there was Clan Shadow Runner, made up by assassins and cutthroats.
The clans lived in constant conflict, always vying for supremacy. The politics
conducted by the ruling clans was generally a knife in the back. At some point a
brave young warrior by the name of Eshtine from Clan Tyrant came to sit as
ruling leader. He had ideas and dreams that his people would live on the surface
of Alura and no longer be forced to live this life of darkness. He called for a
meeting with the leaders of the other ruling Clans and discussed his plans with
them. After several long weeks of heated discussion, the leading rulers decided
it was time to put their differences aside and unite as one. Their plan was to
crush the surface dwellers and take their rightful place as the rulers of Alura.
The next few months were spent preparing for the upcoming battle. Scouts had
been sent out from Clan Seeker and reported back that the surface dwellers knew
nothing of their coming destruction. Everything seemed to be going precisely to
plan, that was until one week away from their departure, Eshtine had been found
murdered in his sleeping chamber. No one claimed responsibility for this
ultimate act of betrayal. Names were cursed, fingers pointed and it soon became
an all out war between the clans.
After a long and gruesome battle the clans dispersed to their respective parts
of the empire. What started off as the road to ultimate glory almost ended in
the utter destruction of the entire race. To this day no clan has claimed the
responsibility for the murder of the Vermin’s greatest ruler Eshtine and they
remain in bitter conflict. However in the back of their minds is a hope that one
day a ruler might rise and lead their people to the glory they desire.
