" As long as the rivers and the mountains stood through time, the magical
gnomes have been there silently watching. Their intellect is only surpassed by
their unending wisdom of all things. Believed at one time to be only mythical
creatures that roamed free in the wilderness, the gnome civilization has long
lived in secrecy from the outside world. It wasn't until sometime later in
recorded time that their presence was known. "
" Observant by nature and curious by the need to be more knowledgeable in
all subjects, the gnomes never interfered or disturbed with the happenings of
the world around them. They have documented every major event since they grasped
the idea of reading and writing. The gnome people are perfectionists in
maximizing their own mental capabilities, this causes them to be very critical
with details and to review them countless times until perfection is achieved.
They make up for their short stature with an extremely heightened sense of
awareness, which enabled them to stay reluctantly hidden for so many centuries.
"
" Always having their great need for intellectual stimulation, they turned
to learning magic as a means of defense and to ease the work load of every day
life. These rather short people began becoming masters of the magical arts, some
even grew too powerful for their own good. In 117, a high council of the arts
was formed to prevent any who wish to abuse this power. The high council
consisted of 10 extremely powerful wizards who swore to never let any of their
people be the cause of any harm. It was strictly forbidden for a gnome to ever
use their magical abilities in a spiteful way towards another being. "
" For years the high council of the arts were successful in their cause,
but with good always comes evil. His name was Greninus, this malevolent gnome
despised other races accomplishments and glories. Driven by hatred, Greninus
became the most powerful amongst his people and proceeded to defy the councils
teachings. From 280-295 he wreaked havoc upon travelers and soldiers from all
races by conjuring hellish creatures to let lose upon villages. The gnomes were
discovered as Greninus was seen doing these malicious acts, and it was thought
that all gnomes were of the same nature. The high council was at wits end trying
to capture the rogue gnome who was giving all the gnome people a bad name.
Finally in 295 they killed Greninus in an epic battle called, The Battle of
Middle Road. Unfortunatly, it was too late for the damage was already done.
"
" Although almost every race was tormented by Greninus, there was yet one
civilization he failed to reach deep in the caverns. The dwarven people had
learned about the gnomes from their long time friends the elves. They were told
of how the once thought fable gnomes were actually truth and how they were very
knowledgeable with magic, but extremely dangerous to anyone who ran across one.
Greninus had unleashed vile beasts on the elves and they like other races
assumed that's how all gnomes behaved. Intrigued by amount of intelligence that
this race has been said to have, dwarf warriors set off to find these gnomes and
see if what was said is in-fact truth. The gnomes greeted the dwarves with a
great welcome, and the dwarven warriors were amazed by the brilliance and
kindness of the race. A partnership had began that day between the gnomes and
dwarves, both seeing equal benefits from one another. The gnomes would have
brute strength on their side if any race decides to prosecute them for the
actions of Greninus and the dwarves sought the intellectual help they were
lacking in their society. These two races quickly became allies as the gnomes
helped to educate and the dwarves helped to instruct fighting techniques and
provided protection. "
" Centuries later and they are still pleading to not be deemed a wicked
race, but instead an highly sophisticated race of a peaceful nature. The dwarves
know fully of their helpful nature, but no other race will fully ever trust a
gnome for they feel they are full of trickery and hatred. Since the time of
their discovery in this world, the gnomes have kept mainly to themselves. Only
communications and interactions made with anyone was to maintain their
friendship with the dwarves for fear that any further negative publicity created
on their behalf will cause a war against them. One gnomes actions has forever
labeled them untrustworthy and with that in mind the high council of the arts
dissipated shortly after they were unsuccessful in keeping their society a
secret. The abuse of gnome power is still frowned upon in their civilization to
this day, and they still continue to enlighten young dwarves with their
brilliant minds. "
